How to Fix Low Virtual Memory Error in Windows

Generally when you install/run very big applications like 3DMax, Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Dreamweaver the windows based PCs start giving you a error message saying Your system is low on virtual memory. To ensure that Windows runs properly, increase the size of your virtual memory paging file.

Reasons for Low Virtual Memory :

Lets say you are running a application like Adobe Photoshop and while you are rendering a big sized image the pc starts using high amount of RAM and when there isnt any adequate Random Access Memory on your PC which can handle processing of this data. This is when the PC starts using the Virtual Memory.

What is Virtual Memory :

Temporary storage used by a computer to run programs that need more memory than it has. For example, programs could have access to 4 gigabytes of virtual memory on a computers hard drive, even if the computer has only 32 megabytes of RAM. The program data that does not currently fit in the computers memory is saved into paging files.

Finding Source of Low Virtual Memory Problem :

In order to quickly solve this problem you need to first find the source of it by checking out the Task Manager and analyzing all the programs to find which one of those is using the highest memory and closing them. This way you can close the programs which you are not actively using and those which use high amount of your memory.

Click on Windows Task Manager > View > Select Columns

Next Click on Select Columns option from the View Menu and Check on Virtual Memory Size Option

How to Start Windows in Safe Mode?

Question : I have been a Windows User from the past 9 years and whenever i install some new software application, i get a error on my computer which asks me to restart the computer in Safe Mode and then uninstall the recently installed software to fix the issue. Iam really confused how to restart the computer in Safe Mode and get access to it because whenever i start the computer it shows me Welcome to Windows Screen and then Loading Windows but no option like Safe Mode is found in the Control Panel too. Please help me find it.

Answer : In every Windows Operating System starting from Windows 95, 98/Me, 2000, XP, Vista to Windows 7, you will be able to boot your Windows in the Safe Mode. This means that this isnt any option in the control panel but starting your computer in a completely Safe Mode where in you can perform different tasks. Anyway in order to get started you will have to from your normal Windows Operating System, click on the restart button and reboot your computer. Once the PC starts loading, following a beep you need to press the F8' key on your keyboard multiple times so that you dont miss the function of entering into the Safe Mode.

Next you will find a list of options which would ask you to select one of these as listed below.
  • Safe Mode
  • Safe Mode with Networking
  • Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Based on your requirements you can select the option and continue with your main task. Sometimes these options wont be working which is when you can use the System Configuration Tool Method, under which you need to click on Start > Run > msconfig.

Next you will get a new utility, under which you will find different Startup selections under the General Tab. Next under the BOOT.INI menu in the main tabs you will find different options out of which you need to select the /SAFEBOOT under boot options which would then perform the same action and would confirm you to restart your computer, which once done would start your computer in Safe Mode.

How to Remove left Sidebar in Google search

You may have noticed the new Google search interface, which features a new left-hand navigation (left sidebar) and a modified Google logo which looks pretty cool. The new side panel highlights the most relevant search tools and refinements for your query, making it easier to find exactly what youre looking for.

However, most users may find the new sidebar integrated to left of Google searchresults not useful and pretty annoying. Theres an easy way to hide the left-hand navigation pane/sidebar in Chrome and Firefox browser.

To Hide Google sidebar in Chrome, install the extension Hide Google Options. Itll remove the persistent sidebar and also ensures the Options pane remains a choice for users. You can click its icon to alternately show or hide the options shown in the left-hand pane of Google search results. (Supports worldwide google domains)

To Disable Google sidebar in Firefox, install the add-on Hide Google Options. You can easily enable/disable it anytime from status bar in just a single click. Currently removes the sidebar only from google.com search results.

Firefox users can instead install Google Fix userscript (using Greasemonkey add-on) which removes the left sidebar and bottom search bar from all regions of google search results, providing the Old Google interface.

Internet Explorer & Opera users can use this direct link to get back the old Google user interface. Bookmark: http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=all

How to Extract Text from Images Online & PDF Files

Recently i had received a report from a company which had stats on the best laptops which was sent by a media company and while reading the report i thought to share a part of the stats with all my blog reader, but well it was not possible because it was a JPEG Image which the report was saved as and there was no option to copy any part of this. Now in order to extract all the text content from the Image i had to use a Online Tool called as Free OCR also means Optical Character Recognition which is a technology used to mechanically or electronically translate images into machine editable text which means into a kind of text which you can use it easily.

To make you understand this technology in easy format, lets take a example. Whenever you scan some important document, you will find that its available to you to be saved as a Image file and you cannot select any other format in this case, because the scanner would take a photographic screenshot of document and present it to you. Now the OCR Readers would perform the reverse job and offer you a text format of the Image files. In order to get this task done you need to visit the website and browse the Image file on your local computer and click on the send file button, which would upload the file to the free-ocr.com website server where its being converted and then the results are shown on the same window at the end.

There are many chances that the text format is lost, because in the Image you would find the information stored in perfect tables and good layouts, but at the end you can find garbled text, which you need to format manually and still this is a good service because atleast you dont have to manually type down all the text content from the Image. You just have to take the pieces of text which was downloaded and format it correctly for your usage.

How to make Windows XP look like Vista

Vista looks pretty cool eh, you might have even considered buying it until you saw the price tag, or maybe you just didn't want to get it because all of the bugs, but either way theres no need to fear because free vista is here! This is not actually windows vista but its pretty close. It's a theming pack called Vista Transformation Pack 7. It basically gives your old XP or 2000 a digital makeover, and we're going to find out how to use it.

step 1Download Your Files
To make this look like vista we're going to need 2 programs: 1. Vista Tansformation Pack 7 2. Fast Aero What is Vista Transformation Pack 7? Vista transformation pack 7 is a theming program that themes your os to vista by changing things like your boot screen your taskbar your wallpaper your screen savers ect. What is Fast Aero? Ya know the nice transparent window
step 2Removing Hotfix KB925902
Now if you just tried to install the program you probably noticed an error message such as the one below. All you have to do to fix it is go to add or remove programs in control panel, and check the box that says "show updates". It will load and then scroll down to around the bottom where you'll find the hotfix we need to remove. Once found all you have to do is select
step 3Installing
Once restarted click on the vista transformation pack 7 file and open it. An error message will pop up saying get windowblinds. you don't need it so just press ok Now a screen will say that this is free software and not to be sold. Now, lets get to installing Box 1. It basically says read everything carefully or you could (although it's highly unlikely) brick y
step 4Installing Part 2
Box 2. You will see a donate page to donate to Mr. Windows X (why don't you, he put a lot of hard work and effort into this).

step 5Installing Part 3
Box 3. On this page you will find the requirements. Make sure your computer meets all the necessary needs and press next.

step 6Installing Part 4
Box 4. You will now see the license agreement page. Read it over carefully and accept. Press next.

step 7Installing Part 5
Box 5. This page just tells you what its going to do. read it over and press next.

step 8Installing Part 6
Box 6. This page is the faq and is very useful and should be backed up so i have provided you with a copy for future reference.

step 9Installing Part 7
Box 7. This page is very informing and includes important info. I have also provided you with a copy.

step 10Installing Part 8
Box 8. This step asks you if you want to apply vista ui transformation into system or integrate vista transformation pack into system files. choose which one best suits your needs and press next, but if your unsure on what to do select the ui transformation because if you select integrate it into the setup files you can't revert your system files back to the original ones.

How to Build Your own RC Helicopter

Flying RC helicopter is really very exhilarating. Their versatility gives a RC pilot a complete access to the three-dimensional space in such a way that no other machines can! I have played RC helicopter for more than one year but still find that I have just learnt a few tricks that it can perform.

There are generally two micro-helicopters ( indoor ) in the RC market. I have already planned to buy one of them as they can fly inside the living room and even take off on ours hand. Unlike those operated by gas, these electric helicopters are very clean and give out no terrible noise at all. In one nightfall, I visited a web site, which is about how to make a hand made RC helicopter. I was totally impressed and started designing my own helicopter. Here is my helicopter:

The plan of the helicopter had finally been completed. It is not very well drew. The current plan available is only for the fixed pitch design.

If you are a fan of RC helicopters and would like to build your own then check out the site linked below. It details the steps that one guy took to build his own helicopter. No doubt, you need to have some good skills to create one of these indoor beauties and no doubt if you are not skilled then you best dish out 30 quid and buy one already made.

What makes these small helicopters great is that they are not petrol engine helicopters. They are indoor RC (battery powered) helicopters. This means you can fly this around your living room and hopefully not break any of your mothers breakables.

Good luck building and do not hesitate to link to pics of your own creations should you decide to make your own.

Click this link for full step-by-step procedure to make your own helicopter.

Please let me know if you like this post and want me provide you with some other posts similar to this one. You can use the comment form below.

How to Read Popular Magazines Online for Free?

There are many different ways through which you can read different magazines online for free of cost but in this article iam going to show you a excellent way which was sent to us by one of our blog reader. Generally most of the paid magazines are paid ones and the subscription costs range from 20-100$ per year which is the reason if you try to opt for a few magazines the total annual bills would reach to bigger numbers.

First of all you need to download the Safari Browser which comes preinstalled in Mac computers and which is available as a free download for my readers. Next you need to go to the Advanced option in it by clicking on Edit > Preferances > Advanced > Show Develop Menu in menu bar. Click on the checkbox to yes.

Next you will find a new option on your Browsers Menu Bar under the name of Develop where you need to select the option of iPhone Agent. Go to Develop > User Agent > Mobile Safari 3.1.2 iPhone.

Once this is done what really happens is that, your browser now opens websites as if they were loading on a Apple iPhone. This would make you access the iPhone optimized websites inside your Safari Browser. Next access the URL http://imgs.zinio.com/iphone/. Next you will find a list of ebooks as shown in this screenshot which when clicked would open in full screen on your browser and also a recommendation that if you open these on iphone, landscape mode is recommended. Overall a excellent website for apple iphone users which can now be accessed on your computer and accessed anywhere anytime.

Download Safari 4 Here for Free.

How to Monitor RAM Usage with Memory Cleaning Tool Memory Cleaner?

Does your computer hang regularly when you are use multiple applications which include high resource using softwares like Mozilla Firefox, FTP Programs etc, and the only solution offered by your PC Seller is that you need to upgrade either your complete PC or else your RAM to the maximum compatible RAM.

Once you install this small application you will get a report with the total Memory Usage currently used and the Average and Maximum Usage. You will be able to clean the System Cache and Trim Processes. Once these settings were run i was able to decrease my memory usage from 55% to 45% which is a quite good result because while you are running numerous applications which are all useful, any small increase in free memory can help you easily handle your applications easily.

Features of Memory Cleaner :

1. Trims processes working set.
2. Clears system cache.
3. Monitors RAM usage and reports minimum, maximum and average (true average, not (min+max)/2).
4. Reports Pagefile and virtual memory usage.

Next move on to the Task Managers main process tab and find all the programs which are using high amount of Virtual Memory and End their Process.

You can also try to uninstall and reinstall these high memory using programs because sometimes older versions of some software end up using high amount of RAM/Virtual RAM. I would recommend you to setup your Virtual Memory to 1.5 times of your physical memory for better performance.

How to Disable Automatic Updates Restart Computer Notification?

Whenever you go for a windows xp software update you will be notified with a message every 10minutes to either Restart the computer right away or later and this notifications keep popping up every 10minutes which can make you annoyed and would plan to restart but if you are in the middle of some important work then you should find a way to disable this notification and it would pop-up back after a 24 hours delay between which you can continue with your work without any disturbance.

Here is the way to stop these notifications.
  • Click Start >>> Run >>> type in gpedit.msc
  • Go to Local Computer Policy >>> Computer Configuration >>> Administrative Templates >>> Windows Components >>> Windows Update >>> Next
  • To disable auto restart: double click No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Update installations and enable this function.
  • To delay the re-prompt by 24 hours: double click Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations and enable this function. Then set the timing to 1440 minutes this is the maximum allowable time

Its generally recommended to restart your computer whenever you make a computer windows update because in most cases these are very important security updates and restarting would mean installation of these notifications. You are at risk if you dont restart your computer once the updates are downloaded and installed but at certain times you would need the above trick while you are in the middle of something where you cannot restart. This trick works on Windows XP Professional and not on Windows XP home version.

How to Make Money From Your Blog Some other Direct Methods

Having thought through whether you should blog for money it is now worth taking a look at some of the different models for doing so.

I tend to break the different models that bloggers are using to make money from blogging into two areas Direct and Indirect methods.
I described some direct methods in the previous post. If you have not read that post please first read it then read this post for some other direct mehods to make money. Methods 1 and 2 are listed in the previous post and the other methods are :

3. Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are where you take a commission for referring a reader who purchases a product or service to a company. Probably the most common of these for bloggers isAmazon which has tens of thousands of products that you can link to (I reviewed it here). Other affiliate programs that represent many different companies and products includeLinkshare, Commission Junction and Clickbank.

Affiliate programs take some work if you want to get the most out of them (perhaps more work than advertising) but can be lucrative if you match the right program with the right blog/topic. If you want to explore affiliate programs more you might like to read 10 tips for using affiliate programs on you blog.

4. Selling/Flipping Blogs

T
he idea of selling (or flipping) your blog is one that many bloggers have in the back of their minds for one day but in reality it is not something that is overly common yet (I think this is changing). Probably the largest sale is that of Weblogs Inc (a network of blogs) which sold to AOL for a reported $25 million. Of course this is the stuff that most of us can only dream of but there are examples of smaller blogs being sold, either privately or via auctions on sites like eBay and SitePoint. One such auction was that of the Blog Herald which took place here.

Starting a blog with the main goal of selling it down the track is one that Ive heard of a number of bloggers doing but few have been successful. Rather than starting with this intention I think if you start with the intention of building a quality site that has a large readership and its own good income stream you are more likely to find buyers down the track.

5. Donations and Tip Jars
A very small number of blogs have a history of making good money with these (Jason Kottke being one of them). To be successful with asking for money from readers youll want to have a large and loyal readership (and a rich one might help too). Most bloggers just dont have the critical mass or the cult following to make it work.

6. Merchandise

Another method that some blogs use with reasonable effect is to sell T-Shirts, Mugs, Stickers etc with the blogs name, logo and/or taglines on it. This is another idea that will probably only work if you either have a brilliantly designed merchandise range and/or you have a cult-like status as a blogger with some fanatical readers who are a little obsessive about your blog. Some blog topics lend themselves to this more than others.

7. Selling Subscriptions

The idea of charging readers for content is one that surfaces from time to time. While there are numerous websites around the web that do this successfully (community membership sites) Im yet to see many (any) blogs do it well. The problem that most bloggers who have tried it have run into is that most topics that you could think to start a blog about already have free sites available. To make it succeed you would need to have some sort of premium/exclusive content and/or real expertise on a topic.

8. Blog Networks

Another emerging income source for bloggers are blog networks. There are two ways to make money here. Firstly you can start a network and contract bloggers to write for you or secondly you might like to join a blog network as a writer. There are many networks out there and all have their own strengths and weaknesses. Ill attempt to write a post on what to think about when youre looking at whether to join a network later in this series.

How to Make Money From Your Blog Direct Methods

Having thought through whether you should blog for money it is now worth taking a look at some of the different models for doing so.

I tend to break the different models that bloggers are using to make money from blogging into two areas Direct and Indirect methods.

Direct Income Earning Methods - these methods are where a blogger earns an income directly FROM their blog.

Indirect Income Earning Methods these methods are where a blogger earns an income BECAUSE of their blog.

Most blogs tend to fall into one or the other of these methods although there is nothing to stop bloggers experimenting with elements of both ( Ive seen a few bloggers get into trouble with this (example: Scenario 1 in the previous post).

In this post Ill look at 8 direct income earning methods and in the next post of this series Ill explore indirect methods. Please note that on occasion in the following post there will be few affiliate links to services that I use and have had some success with. These will be marked with (aff) after them.

Direct Income Earning Methods for Bloggers

1. Advertising

There are many ways of selling advertising space on a blog (this could almost be a series of its own) but some of the different advertising options that I see bloggers experimenting with include:

  • Contextual Advertising  Programs like AdSense and YPN (beta) are very popular with bloggers and are probably the most common income stream being used by them today (MSN are developing one too). In short these programs scan the content of your blog to assertion what its topic is and attempt to put contextually relevant ads (text and image) onto your blog. They are generally simple to use and involve pasting some code into your blogs templates. Payment is on a per click basis (referred to as CPC or cost per click ads). Contextual ads suit blogs that have a particular niche topic, especially if it has some sort of commercial angle (ie it has products and services associated with it). They are not so good with general type blogs (ie many topics) and/or political/spiritual blogs which argue just one side of a case (this confuses AdSense). I write much more extensively on how to useAdSense on your blog here.
  • Other CPC Advertising  There are a variety of other ad systems that pay on a per click basis which are not contextual in nature (which is important as systems like AdSense do not allow you to run contextual ads on the same page view as them). These systems include Chitikas eMiniMalls (aff) which I reviewed here.
  • Impression Based Ads  Impression based ads pay a small amount for every person who views the advertisement. The amount that they pays varies from program to program (and ad to ad) and is generally a fraction of a cent. There are a variety of ad systems around like this including Fastclick (aff) which I reviewed here and Tribal Fusion. Impression based ads wont earn you much if you dont have a lot of traffic but can be great if you do.
  • Blog Ads  BlogAds have become something of an institution when it comes to advertising on blogs. They traditionally have had a focus upon monetizing political blogs but are expanding their focus lately. The beauty of them is that bloggers set their own rates and can accept or reject advertisers that apply to them to be featured on their blogs. These ads put the control of what ads show and how much they earn into the hands of the blogger. The downside is that if you price them too high you could never have any ads showing at all. They can also be difficult to be accepted into as a publisher as these days they only accept people into the system if they have a someone who is already in sponsor or recommend the new publisher.
  • Text Ads  Another increasingly popular way to sell ads on your blog is to look into text links. The beauty of these are that they dont take up much room and that depending upon the system you choose to run them you can have control over which advertisers you accept and reject. AdBrite (aff) is one such system that gives you control in a similar way to BlogAds in that you set your own prices and approve all ads. They also other other formats of ads. Text Link Ads (aff) is another text link seller that more and more bloggers are using. The beauty of both of these systems is that they have a pool of advertisers already so you dont have to go looking for your own advertisers. Their systems are also both very automated and are just a matter of pasting some code onto your blog. I use them both and while they dont earn anywhere near as much as AdSense or Chitika for me they add up over the year and have done well for me. Bidvertiser and Adzaar are other system that I know are popular with some (weve used them quite successfully on b5media although I have little personal experience with them).
  • RSS Ads  An increasingly popular way for people to read blogs is via RSS. As a result publishers and ad providers have been keen to find ways to place ads in feeds. These attempts have been met with a variety of success levels. Im yet to hear of too many people making big dollars with RSS ads yet but the ad systems seem to be improving. AdSense offers RSS ads to some of its publishers (you have to have a certain number of impressions first) as does YPN. Feedburner is a tool Ive used to help monetise my own feeds they give publishers three options (1. AdSense if youve been approved by them, 2. Amazon affiliate program and 3. if you have a lot of subscribers (over 500) they have an Ad Network). Pheedo is another system that you might like to try (although Ive not had much experience with it).
  • Other Ads Systems  In addition to the above systems (most of which Ive used myself) are many other advertising options which Ive not had experience with and so wont personally recommend. Im sure they are worth experimenting with however as I see many of them being used by bloggers every day. Here they are in no particular order:
  • AdGenta, CrispAds, Clicksor, Intelli Txt, Peak Click, Double Click, Industry Brains,AdHearUs, Kanoodle, AVN, Pheedo, Adknowledge, YesAdvertising, RevenuePilotTextAds,SearchFeed, Target Point, OneMonkey, and TextAds. Feel free to add your own and tell us how youve gone with them in comments below.
2. Sponsorship

Another form of advertising that a smaller number of bloggers are using is to find their own advertisers. All of the above systems have the advantage of finding you advertisers (or at least assisting in the automation of ads to your blog) but as your blog grows in profile and influence you might find other options for private deals come up.

The big blog networks have people dedicated to the task of finding advertisers (often working through ad agencies) but smaller bloggers might find this worthwhile also. Ive been selling ads on my Digital Camera Blog for two years now and as its grown in traffic and profile and managed to attract larger companies (who are willing to pay more) to buys space. Currently the blog features ads from Adobe who have bought a combination of banner, newsletter and text ads.

The key if youre going to take this approach is to target advertisers in your niche that have products that closely relate to what youre writing about. There are a variety of ads that you can offer them including banner ads, buttons, text links, mentions in newsletters and even individual post sponsorships. I would highly recommend that you always make it clear to readers that your post is a sponsored one when youre writing a sponsored post.

There some other direct income earning methods for bloggers which you can read in this Post.
